AI electronics assistant: LED resistor, schematic, PCB rules, parts list
Ask how to calculate a resistor for an LED on 12 V, and the AI assistant EDi Electronics Helper answers and, for a calculation, can build a sheet with checked arithmetic. By its instructions it also draws a schematic and builds a parts list. Its screen and answers are in Bulgarian.

What an AI electronics assistant is
Knowing how to calculate a resistor for an LED means finding the resistance that limits the current through the diode to a safe value. EDi Electronics Helper is an AI assistant on EduFacturing for hobbyists and schools: you describe the task and get the calculation step by step.
For a calculation the assistant is told to build a calculation sheet in which code recalculates each step; code does not require the sheet. It requires only the PCB rules document with every question.
Part of Ultra: one question costs 8 credits, and 1500 credits a month cover 187 questions if you spend none on other assistants (the wallet is shared).
What you get: calculation, schematic, parts list, PCB rules
Works out the calculation and shows it
Give the voltage, the current and what is powered, and get the formula with the numbers filled in; for a calculation the assistant is told to make a PDF calculation sheet too.
Draws a what-connects-to-what schematic
Labelled boxes with values and lines, in the work area and as SVG. A diagram, not a drawing with standard symbols.
Builds a parts list (BOM)
Positions and quantities as PDF and CSV for Excel. Each is searched by name in a library of 3D models (2701 components, mostly connectors and motors): “yes” means a part with that name exists, not that it is yours. A plain resistor or LED is often not found.
Gives PCB rules
Trace width by current, clearance by voltage, spacing between traces and the ring around a hole, as PDF and CSV.
When to ask before you solder
It suits you when you want to be sure of a value before soldering.
A project with an LED or a microcontroller
The screen’s examples: an LED resistor on 12 V, the current of a 0.5 mm2 wire, an ESP32 on a battery.
A lesson or an exercise
A student sees each step.
A new circuit board
Trace width and clearance in a PDF.
Ordering parts
An order list; check the values against the datasheet.
Where the numbers come from and how they are checked
Code checks the arithmetic of the calculation sheet and calculates the PCB rules.
Recognises the question
It is told: universal formulas for basic calculations, the EDi Brain rules only for PCBs, cleanrooms and batteries.
Builds a calculation sheet
Code recalculates up to 20 steps made of plain numbers and marks a row for checking when the difference is over 1 percent; other expressions get a question mark.
Calculates PCB rules
Width, clearance, spacing and ring come from the EDi Brain rules and are calculated by code.
| Applies to | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Trace width | ((I / (k · ΔT^0.44))^(1/0.725)) · 0.0254² / t | I in A, ΔT in °C, k = 0.048 (outer) or 0.024 (inner layer), t = 0.035 mm for 1 oz copper. At 1 A, 10 °C, outer layer: about 0.30 mm |
| Annular ring | class 2: at least 0.05 mm; class 3: at least 0.1 mm | a smaller ring is a defect |
| Check of a calculation | difference up to 1 percent between expression and result | above that: marked for checking |
You see the formula and a check of the steps in the sheet
You see the formula and the steps
In the calculation sheet: the given values, the steps and a check of each.
It says where a number comes from
“By general engineering practice” for basic calculations, the EDi Brain rules for boards; if two clearance rules disagree, it gives both.
The library search is visible
The summary counts positions that have a part of that name.
It is not a circuit simulator and does not prepare a board for manufacturing. The parts list does not check component values. Code requires the PCB rules document with every question: for a resistor question it has only a general note, or a note says it was not made.
The clearance rules contain known disputes: the assistant shows both values and points to the standard. For 220 V it is told to recommend an electrician; that is no guarantee.
Answers are written by AI and may contain mistakes. It takes text only, up to 4000 characters. The screen, answers and files are in Bulgarian, also to an English question; the screenshot shows the Bulgarian screen.
Questions about LED resistors, PCB traces and schematics
How do I calculate a resistor for an LED?
Divide the difference between the supply voltage and the LED voltage by the LED current: R = (Usupply − Uled) / I. For 12 V, a 2 V LED and 20 mA: (12 − 2) / 0.02 = 500 Ω. The LED values are on its datasheet.
What resistor do I need for an LED on 12 V?
It depends on the LED, not only on the 12 V: you need its voltage and current. The assistant is told to state an assumption and ask for them; a reply that is only a question still costs credits.
How wide should PCB traces be?
It depends on current, temperature rise, layer and copper. By IPC-2221, 1 A, 10 °C, an outer layer and 1 oz copper give about 0.30 mm. An inner layer needs more.
Which files do I get?
The PCB rules (PDF and CSV) with every question. For a resistor question that is a document with a general note, a note that the file was not made, or an error with credits returned. By question also a calculation (PDF), a schematic (SVG) and a parts list (PDF and CSV). Files are in Bulgarian and stay 24 hours.
Does it answer in English?
No. The screen and answers are in Bulgarian, as its instructions require. In our test on 10.10.2026 with another assistant, an English question also got a Bulgarian answer.
How much does a question cost?
Ultra is 39 EUR a month with 1500 credits. One question is 8 credits: 187 questions a month if you spend none on other assistants (the wallet is shared). A question outside electronics is usually declined without credits; a model checks it and can err.
