3D print model checker: overhangs, size and print orientation

Upload an STL file and ask in plain words whether it will print. The AI assistant, “EDi DFAM Ревюер” (EDi DFAM Review), measures the model, shows its overhangs in red, tries eight orientations and tells you what to fix before you print. Its screen and answers are in Bulgarian.

Part of Ultra, 39 EUR a month, with 1500 credits each month.

What a 3D print model check is

A 3D print model checker tells you before printing whether the model will come out: unsupported overhangs, how large it is, whether the mesh is closed. EDi DFAM Review is an AI assistant on EduFacturing that runs this check on your STL and answers in words. DFAM means design for additive manufacturing.

The numbers are not the AI's guess: the server measures the bounding box, smallest dimension, overhang share and whether the mesh is closed. The limits are set in the code: overhang above 45°, size below 0.8 mm or above 256 mm. The EDi Brain rules for walls and holes are an instruction to the assistant.

Part of the Ultra plan. One question costs 15 credits; credits are shared by all assistants, so 1500 a month cover 100 questions only if you spend them nowhere else. Without an uploaded model no credits are spent.

What the assistant does with your STL

Measures the model and colours the overhangs

After the upload you see the model in the “Работна зона” (Work area) and turn it with the mouse. Overhangs are red on it when they are at least 5% of the surface. Orange is only a warning in the legend: smallest dimension below 0.8 mm or largest above 256 mm. edi-review.stl is a copy of your STL without colours.

Tries to repair a mesh that is not closed

If the mesh is not closed, the assistant is told to try a repair: it removes duplicate and broken faces and closes the smallest holes (one or two missing triangles). Larger holes stay. edi-repaired.stl is offered even when the mesh stays open; the assistant is told to report before and after.

Ranks eight orientations with numbers

The model is turned through eight poses: six flat and two tilted at 45°. For each it calculates overhang, height, base and support volume. The ranking downloads as PDF and CSV.

Answers your question point by point

The assistant is told to give three parts: problems by priority with a fix, what is fine, and the recommended orientation with an estimate of the support saved.

When to check an STL for 3D printing

A check pays off for long prints, someone else's models and parts that will be sold.

  • Before a long print

A failed six-hour print costs more than one check. You see the overhangs before you start the printer.

  • A model downloaded from the internet

A downloaded STL often has an open mesh. The assistant says so, tries a repair and gives you the file; larger holes stay.

  • A customer order

After the check the screen offers a next step without a new upload: “EDi Настройчик” (EDi Slicer Tuner) gives a slicer profile (10 credits), “EDi Оферта” (EDi Quote) a quote (20 credits).

How the assistant reaches its answer

Four steps: the first, second and fourth are calculations on the mesh, the third is an instruction to the assistant.

  1. Server analysis

Bounding box, smallest dimension, overhang share and whether the mesh is closed come from the STL. The volume is exact only for a closed mesh, otherwise it is that of the convex hull.

  2. Review on screen

A downward face flatter than 45° from the bed is an overhang; faces within 0.6 mm of the bed are not counted.

  3. The rules

The assistant is told to look up wall, hole, overhang and tolerance limits for FDM, SLA or SLS in the EDi Brain rules. The AI writes the comparison, not the server.

  4. Eight orientations

Score: overhang % + 0.10 · height (mm) − 0.05 · base X·Y (cm², at most 100). The support volume is shown but not scored.

You see the overhangs on the model itself

  • You see the overhangs

Red on your own model in the work area; the downloaded files carry no colours.

  • The orientation is calculated

Eight poses compared with numbers; you keep the ranking as PDF and CSV. Supports are an estimate at 15% density.

  • It says what it does not know

The assistant is told to say so and to point to what to check in the slicer.

What the check does not cover

The check does not measure wall thickness: only the smallest and largest dimension of the whole model and whether the mesh is closed. Look at thin walls and inner details in the slicer. The assistant does not slice the model or give print time.

The answers are written by AI and may contain mistakes. The repair does not succeed on every model. An answer that ends in a question instead of a check also costs 15 credits. The assistant answers in Bulgarian, also to an English question (our test of 10.10.2026).

Questions about the 3D print model checker

How to check if an STL is printable?

Upload the STL, type your question and press the “Питай” (Ask) button. You get the problems by priority, what is fine and a recommended orientation, with overhangs red on the model.

Is my model printable?

The assistant measures overhangs, the smallest and largest dimension and whether the mesh is closed, and is told to compare them with the rules for your technology.

What do I get besides the answer?

Up to four files: a copy of your STL without colours (edi-review.stl), a repaired STL after a repair (edi-repaired.stl), and the orientation ranking as PDF and CSV.

How is the print orientation chosen?

Eight poses; the answer reports the top one and how much support it saves against the worst of the eight (an estimate at 15% density).

How much does the 3D print model checker cost?

Part of Ultra at 39 EUR a month with 1500 credits. One question costs 15 credits, so 100 questions if you spend nothing elsewhere. The daily cap is 30 runs.

The 3D print model checker is part of Ultra

Ultra costs 39 EUR a month: everything in Pro (45 tools), the EDi assistants and 1500 credits each month. Every run of an assistant spends credits.
