Polymaker: Brand Overview

Polymaker is one of the most respected FDM filament manufacturers in the world. Founded in 2012 in Shanghai by Xiaofan Luo (with a PhD in chemistry from Cornell University), the company built a reputation for premium engineering-grade filaments. From standard PLA to complex carbon-fiber composites, Polymaker covers the full spectrum of FDM applications. It doesn't make printers, it focuses exclusively on materials that work on printers from any manufacturer. In the 3D printing community, Polymaker filaments are considered the standard for quality engineering prototypes, more expensive than eSUN or Anycubic, but with better diameter tolerance and cleaner prints.

History

Polymaker launched in 2012 in Shanghai. Their first product, PolyMax PLA (2014), released a tougher PLA version with higher impact resistance than standard PLA. This was an innovation at a time when brittle PLA was the standard.

In 2016 the company moved to a Dutch-Chinese partnership, opening a European office in the Netherlands for better service in the EU market. This significantly boosted European sales.

2018, launch of PolyMide PA6-CF, one of the first accessible Carbon Fiber reinforced filaments for desktop printers. €70-€90/kg, excellent quality. This opened doors to engineering applications that previously required industrial SLS or Markforged systems.

2020, PolyMide PA12-CF, PolyLite ASA, PolyFlex TPU 95A. The company expanded its portfolio to full engineering coverage.

2023, PolyTerra PLA, biodegradable PLA with a lower carbon footprint. Polymaker strengthened its sustainability focus.

2025, PolyMide PEEK, one of the first accessible PEEK filaments for desktop printers (€350/kg). A semi-industrial material for specialized engineering applications.

Target audience

Engineering studios.

Polymaker is the standard for functional prototypes in small engineering studios in Europe. PolyMide PA6-CF and PC-Max are used for parts under mechanical load, bearing housings, structural elements, EOAT for simple robots.

Architectural and design studios.

PolyTerra matte PLA with 30+ colors is the standard for architectural models, prints cleanly without paint or primer.

Production studios for functional parts.

Small companies making custom spare parts, PolyMide PA6, PolyLite PETG for functional components.

Educational institutions.

Technical universities with FDM labs, PolyMax PLA, PolyLite ABS, PolyLite ASA for student projects.

Pro cosplayers.

PolyTerra matte PLA for armor plates, PolyMide PA6-CF for weapons and props under mechanical load.

Home users (more toward premium).

Bambu Lab and Prusa Research owners who want higher quality than stock Chinese filaments. Polymaker is €5-€10/kg more expensive than eSUN or Anycubic, but with tangibly better diameter tolerance (±0.02 mm vs ±0.05 mm).

NOT for:

budget-conscious hobbyists (€28-€35/kg is expensive vs. eSUN or Sunlu at €15-€20/kg), boutique artistic applications (Polymaker has no special artistic filaments like Bambu Silk Triple Color).

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths:

Diameter tolerance.

±0.02 mm standard, ±0.01 mm for select premium lines. This is the difference between clean and rough prints.

Pantone color palette.

PolyTerra and PolyLite series with 30+ certified colors. Convenient for branded printing.

Wide material range.

From standard PLA to Carbon Fiber and PEEK, full coverage of engineering applications.

European support.

Dutch office for fast EU customer service.
  • Real compostability (for PolyTerra). Biodegradable PLA with realistic compost time (3-6 months in industrial conditions).
  • Certified 'UltiMaker Cura Material Profile' and Bambu Studio profiles, optimal slicer settings, plug-and-play.

Weaknesses:

Price.

Polymaker is among the more expensive filaments on the market. PolyTerra PLA €32/kg vs eSUN PLA €18/kg, 78% more.

Doesn't make printers.

This may look like a downside but is actually a strategic strength (material focus only). For a buyer looking for a 'bundled solution' (printer + filament from one maker), Bambu Lab or Prusa are more convenient.

Limited artistic finishes.

Polymaker lacks Silk Triple Color, Galactic Glitter (like eSUN Galaxy), Glow-in-the-dark series. For artistic applications, eSUN or Bambu Lab have more options.

PolyMide PEEK requires a specialized printer.

PEEK filament only works on printers with 360-400°C hotends and enclosed bodies, Stratasys, Markforged, or specialized (Intamsys Funmat HT). A home printer like Bambu X1 cannot.

Where to buy and similar brands

Distributors:

  • Local 3D printing distributors, official Polymaker resellers with regional stock and fast delivery (1-3 working days in major cities).
  • EMag-style marketplace, some Polymaker filaments available directly (smaller range, but competitive prices).

Direct ordering from Polymaker Europe (€10-€20 shipping for orders over €100). Recommended for exotic materials (PEEK, Polycarbonate FR) not stocked locally.

Similar brands and alternatives:

  • Fillamentum (Czech Republic), European competitor with a similar range, smaller carbon fiber portfolio. Ideal for wood (Timberfill) and metallic filaments.
  • BASF Ultrafuse (Germany), UltiMaker industrial partner, engineering PA6, PA12, ASA. More expensive than Polymaker (€80-€150/kg), but with industrial certification.
  • Fiberlogy (Poland), Polish brand with competitive prices and good quality. €20-€35/kg.
  • Prusament (Czech Republic), Prusa Research own line. €30-€40/kg, diameter tolerance ±0.02 mm. Standard for Prusa owners.
  • eSUN (China), €15-€25/kg. Budget price for decent quality, with higher diameter variation (±0.05 mm).
  • Bambu Lab filaments, €25-€35/kg, optimized for Bambu printers with AMS. Competitive with Polymaker.
  • Sunlu (China), €15-€20/kg. Budget price, middling quality.

Recommendation for a mixed stock in a small studio: 60% Polymaker (for quality work), 30% eSUN (for in-house prototypes), 10% specialty (Fillamentum Timberfill, PolySupport for soluble supports).

Frequently asked

How much do Polymaker filaments cost?

Standard PolyTerra PLA, €32-€38/kg (with distributor markup). PolyLite PETG, €28-€34/kg. PolyMide PA6, €58-€68/kg. PolyMide PA6-CF, €78-€90/kg. PolyMide PEEK, €350-€420/kg (special order). Prices are well below BASF Ultrafuse, slightly above eSUN or Sunlu.

Can Polymaker filament work on cheap Chinese printers?

Yes. Polymaker filaments work on any FDM printer. Bambu Lab AMS may need minor settings for specialty filaments (CF composites, higher hotend temp), but standard PLA, PETG, ASA work without modification.

How long do Polymaker filaments last after opening?

Dry 6-12 months, wet 2-4 months. PLA and PETG are more moisture-resistant, PA6 and PA12 absorb moisture very fast (3-7 days in a humid room). A filament dryer (Bambu Lab Dryer €99, eSUN eBox €70) is recommended if you use Nylon.

Does Polymaker have food-safe certifications?

PolyLite PETG in clear and white versions is food-safe certified (FDA, EU 10/2011). Other PETG colors aren't certified (pigments aren't approved). Standard PLA is not food-certified, despite common belief.
