eSUN: Brand Overview

eSUN is one of the most widely available FDM filament brands in the world, a Chinese manufacturer founded in 2002 in Shenzhen. With an annual output of over 15,000 tons of filament, eSUN is among the largest producers of 3D printing materials globally. Their position is 'budget price with acceptable quality', €15-€25/kg for standard filaments, about half the price of Polymaker or Prusament. For hobbyists, beginners, and production farms with high volume, eSUN is the most economically sensible choice. For dental, medical, or certified engineering work, pick premium brands.

History

eSUN was founded in 2002 in Shenzhen by engineers with experience in the petrochemical industry. Initially produced plastic pellets for injection molding. With the rise of desktop 3D printing in 2010-2013, the company shifted production toward 3D printing filaments.

Their first 3D printing filament, eSUN PLA (2014), was a basic PLA at €15/kg, well below Western competitor prices. This opened doors for hobbyists and beginner 3D printers.

2016, PLA+ (PLA Plus), a modified version with higher impact resistance. Became one of the best-selling filaments worldwide.

2018-2020, Galaxy series (with sparkling crystals in the material), Silk series (metallic shiny effect), eFil Wood and Metal series.

2022, ePA-CF (Nylon with carbon fibers), ePEEK (for specialized applications).

2024, eSilk Magic (triplex color Silk filaments), eBio (biodegradable PLAs with lower carbon footprint).

As of 2026, eSUN produces over 100 different filaments in 30+ colors each. Global market share in the desktop FDM segment, about 15-20%.

Target audience

Hobbyists and beginners.

eSUN is the standard for €15-€25/kg filament. For a beginner 3D printer buying their first 5-10 kg of filament for experimentation, eSUN is the most economically sensible.

Students and educational institutions.

Technical schools, engineering faculties with FDM labs, eSUN is the standard. PLA+ for most student projects.

Small production studios with high volume.

Boutique studios producing custom souvenirs, miniatures, small goods, eSUN with smooth quality is economically sensible. €15-€22/kg vs €28-€38 for Polymaker.

Pro cosplayers in extensive work.

For one Iron Man costume (4-6 kg PLA), using eSUN vs Polymaker saves €60-€90 in material.

Artistic experiments.

Galaxy, Silk, Triple Color series for hobbyists and artists who want special effects at an affordable price.

RC modelers.

ePLA-LW (Light Weight), reduces print weight by 50%, optimal for RC planes and drones.

NOT for:

dental and medical work (no certifications), certified engineering applications (BASF Ultrafuse or Polymaker are more appropriate), premium commissioned projects with high prices (where diameter tolerance matters).

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths:

Price.

Among the cheapest filaments on the market. €15-€18/kg for PLA vs €28-€32 for Polymaker.

Wide material range.

100+ different filament types. From standard PLA to PEEK.

Special effects series.

Silk, Galaxy, Wood, Marble, at competitive prices.

Global availability.

eSUN is sold at marketplaces, online stores, and in any specialty 3D printing shop. Easy to find.

Suitable for beginners.

Stable quality, plug-and-play in standard printers.

Weaknesses:

Diameter tolerance.

±0.05 mm standard (vs ±0.02 mm for Polymaker). This can cause clogging or unstable extrusion in premium printers (Bambu, Prusa) at critical settings.

Color consistency.

Between batches (lot to lot), colors can vary noticeably. For a branded print with multiple spools, order from the same production date.

Moisture.

eSUN's packaging is weaker than premium brands. Filaments often arrive with some moisture, drying before use is recommended.

No certified slicer 'profiles'.

In Bambu Studio or Cura, filaments appear as 'Generic PLA' without optimized settings.

Not for industrial certification.

eSUN PEEK isn't certified for medical or aerospace use.

Less color longevity.

Color pigments in eSUN can fade under prolonged UV exposure.

Where to buy and similar brands

Distributors:

  • Online marketplaces, official eSUN channel, wide range. Prices €17-€28/kg by type.
  • AliExpress, direct from eSUN China. Prices 20-30% lower than local marketplaces, but with 2-4 weeks shipping and no local warranty. Recommended for large volume (5+ kg).
  • Regional 3D print distributors, import select series (PLA+, PETG, special effects).

Similar brands and alternatives in the budget category:

  • Sunlu (China), very similar to eSUN. €15-€20/kg. Range slightly smaller than eSUN.
  • Geeetech (China), €15-€18/kg. Acceptable quality for budget applications.
  • Eryone (China), €18-€22/kg. Better diameter tolerance than eSUN, but smaller range.

Anycubic filaments

(€20-€25/kg), optimized for Anycubic printers.

Creality filaments

(€18-€22/kg), Chinese competitor.

Recommendation for a beginner 3D printer:

start with 3 kg of eSUN PLA+ in 3 colors (white, black, clear) for €60-€70. Enough for the first 50-100 prints. Once you justify the printer purchase, move to a mixed inventory (60% eSUN for prototypes, 40% Polymaker or Bambu Lab for quality commissions).

Frequently asked

How much cheaper is eSUN than Polymaker?

Standard PLA:eSUN €15-€18/kg vs Polymaker PolyLite €28/kg, about 45% cheaper. PETG: eSUN €18-€22 vs Polymaker €28, about 30% cheaper. Carbon Fiber: eSUN ePA-CF €55-€65 vs Polymaker PolyMide PA6-CF €78-€90, about 25% cheaper. For high volume (10+ kg/month), the difference is significant, €200-€500/month in savings.

Can eSUN work on Bambu Lab AMS?

Yes. eSUN PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA work without problems on Bambu Lab AMS. Standard filaments have similar characteristics to Bambu's own. For optimized AMS settings, set the filament in Bambu Studio as 'Generic PLA' or 'Generic PETG' with small temperature corrections (eSUN PLA usually wants 5°C more than Bambu PLA Basic).

Why aren't my eSUN prints as clean as Polymaker?

Diameter tolerance. eSUN has ±0.05 mm vs ±0.02 mm for Polymaker. On a printer with PID settings optimized for a tight filament, eSUN can cause micro-fluctuations in flow, visible as a slight color variation along the line. Solution: tune 'flow' by 1-3% (experimental, with a test square in Bambu Studio).

Is eSUN suitable for industrial production?

For consumer products (decoration, toys, artistic objects), yes. For industrial prototypes with critical mechanical characteristics, only ePA-CF is acceptable (but without certifications). For certified applications (medical, aerospace), NO. Choose BASF Ultrafuse or Polymaker with full Material Data Sheets.
