Fillamentum is a Czech company founded in 2014 in Zličín (Prague), specializing in premium FDM filaments with a focus on color, texture, and certified European quality. It's smaller than Polymaker or BASF, but holds a unique position, Fillamentum is a favorite of design and architectural studios because it offers filaments that look and feel like wood, metal, ceramic. The Timberfill series (PLA with wood fibers), CoffeeFill (PLA with coffee husks), Vinyl series (vinyl record imitation) are unique products. Fillamentum is less well-known than Polymaker but actively imported for specialized applications.

History

Fillamentum launched in 2014 in Zličín (Prague suburb) by Vlastimil Smyrek. The core idea was to offer European-made filaments with consistent quality, as opposed to the low-grade Chinese filaments of 2014.

The first product, Extrafill PLA (2015), was a standard PLA with 18+ colors and certified European quality. Price €28-€35/kg.

2016, Timberfill, PLA with wood fibers. Prints on standard FDM printers, gives real wood look and smell. A unique product at the time.

2018, Vinyl series with vintage colors, mimicking old vinyl records and retro design.

2020, Metallic series (Metal Effect PLA) with bronze, copper, gold tones. Stoneform series with a ceramic look.

2022, CoffeeFill, PLA with coffee husks. Real coffee smell when printing and a matte brown surface.

2024, Nylon CF series with carbon fibers, competing with Polymaker PA6-CF.

Fillamentum remains a smaller player than Polymaker but with a unique boutique position. Annual volume is around 200-300 tons of filament, vs 5000+ tons for Polymaker.

Target audience

Architectural and design studios.

Timberfill, Stoneform, Metallic series are the standard for architectural models with wood and metal elements. One residential complex model can include PLA Matt for primary volumes, Timberfill for wood elements, Crystal Clear for windows, Metallic Bronze for metal details.

Artistic and educational institutions.

Artists and designers who use 3D printing for sculptural objects and installations. Fillamentum is a favorite for trying different effects.

Boutique design studios.

Small firms making custom decorative objects, lamps, furniture components.

Pro cosplayers.

Metallic series for metal armor, Timberfill for wood parts of weapons.

Small production studios.

PETG and ABS Extrafill for functional prototypes.

NOT for:

budget-conscious hobbyists (€30-€45/kg is more expensive than eSUN), engineering applications with high load (Polymaker PolyMide PA6-CF is more widespread and better supported), production farms with high volume (BASF Ultrafuse is more industrially certified).

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths:

Unique color and texture range.

Timberfill, CoffeeFill, Metallic, Stoneform, products the competition lacks.

European quality and certification.

Made in the Czech Republic, CE certificates, REACH compliance.

Rich color palette.

18+ colors of Extrafill PLA + special effects series.

Czech support.

Fast EU customer service, English documentation.

Ideal for boutique projects.

An architectural model with Timberfill looks authentic, not 'printed.'

Real packaging.

Cardboard spools instead of plastic (less plastic waste).

Weaknesses:

Price.

Among the more expensive filaments. Timberfill €40/kg, Metallic €45/kg.

Limited engineering materials range.

No Polycarbonate, no PEEK, no advanced composites (only Nylon CF15).

Not for beginners.

Wood-based filaments (Timberfill) wear the nozzle faster than standard PLA, requires a hardened steel hotend.

Small global market share.

Compared to Polymaker or Prusament, Fillamentum is a small player (~200 tons/year vs 5000+ for Polymaker). Availability is more limited.

No certified 'profiles' for major slicers.

Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer have only generic 'PLA' profiles, optimal printing of Timberfill or Stoneform requires manual settings.

Where to buy and similar brands

Distributors:

  • Local resellers, import a limited range (Extrafill PLA, Timberfill, Vinyl series). Fast delivery in major cities.
  • National distributors, wider range, including special effects series.
  • Direct ordering from Fillamentum.com, full range + promotions. Shipping from Czech Republic: €15-€25 for orders under €200, free over €200. Delivery time: 5-7 working days.
  • EMag-style marketplaces, partial availability (only popular colors).

Similar brands and alternatives for special effects:

Polymaker PolyTerra series

(€32-€40/kg), matte finish with a color palette. Similar to Extrafill Matt, but without wood or coffee filaments.

eSUN ePLA-Silk and ePLA-Wood

(€30-€38/kg), Chinese alternative to Silk Triple Color and Wood series. Cheaper, slightly lower quality.
  • Bambu Lab Silk PLA (€30/kg), shiny metallic effect, optimized for Bambu printers.
  • Coloprint (Germany), European boutique brand with special effects. Smaller than Fillamentum.

Fiberlogy Wood and Metal series

(€25-€35/kg), Polish alternative, cheaper.

Recommendation for a design studio with a €500/year filament budget:

70% Fillamentum Extrafill PLA Matt + Timberfill + Metallic (for special models) + 30% Polymaker PolyTerra (for bases and standard volumes).

Frequently asked

How much does Timberfill damage the printer nozzle?

Timberfill contains real wood fibers (about 30% by volume). This abrades standard brass nozzles 2-3× faster than pure PLA. After 5 kg of Timberfill, I recommend replacing the nozzle (€5-€15 for standard brass) or switching to a hardened steel nozzle (€15-€30). Bambu Lab X1-Carbon includes a hardened steel nozzle in the standard package.

Can Timberfill be used for food-contact objects?

Not recommended. Timberfill contains real wood fibers that aren't food-certified. Also, wood fibers retain moisture and can develop microbial growth. For food contact use certified PETG (Polymaker PolyLite PETG Translucent).

How long do special-effects filaments last?

Standard 6-12 months after opening (like all PLA-based materials). Timberfill and CoffeeFill may lose some of their smell after 3-6 months in air. For long-term storage, seal in a zip-lock bag with silica gel.

Does Fillamentum have engineering filaments for loaded parts?

Nylon CF15 (€68/kg), Nylon with 15% carbon fibers. Suitable for functional parts with mechanical load, but not as tough as Polymaker PolyMide PA6-CF (with 25% CF). For the heaviest applications (robot EOAT, structural elements) choose Polymaker or Markforged.
