NEMA 17 dimensions and 3D model of the stepper motor: STEP, STL, 3MF
Pick a NEMA 17, 23 or 34 stepper, the dual-shaft SY35, an induction motor, an encoder, a DQ542MA driver or a mounting plate and get a 1:1 3D model. Download it as STL or 3MF, and for 14 of the 16 variants as STEP too.

What the NEMA 17 dimensions and 3D model show
This is a free online tool from EduFacturing that gives 3D models of drive parts: NEMA 17, 23 and 34 stepper motors, the dual-shaft SY35, an induction motor, an encoder, a stepper driver and a mounting plate. Each part is 1:1 CAD geometry from a catalogue and downloads as STL or 3MF.
The flange sets how much room the motor takes, and torque grows with the length of the body.
Each part has a card with a principle, a formula and an application, and a check with the standard, the type or the function. The material is one of 8 and colours the model; the shape does not change.

Shows 9 parts in 16 variants
The dual-shaft SY35 (NEMA 14 class), NEMA 17, NEMA 23 in 7 lengths, NEMA 23 High Torque, NEMA 34 in 2 lengths, an induction motor, a rotary encoder, a DQ542MA driver and a mounting plate.
Gives the flange and shaft sizes
NEMA 17 is 42×42 mm with a Ø5 mm shaft, NEMA 23 is 57×57 mm with a Ø6.35 mm shaft, NEMA 34 is 86×86 mm with a Ø14 mm shaft, SY35 is 35×35 mm. The sizes are in the check to the left of the model.
Downloads an STL, 3MF and STEP file
STL and 3MF are built in the browser, and for 14 of the 16 variants (all but SY35 and the induction motor) there is also a “Download STEP (CAD)” link.
Adds selection notes
For NEMA 23 High Torque the check reminds you to confirm the driver can supply the current, and for NEMA 34 it says the motor needs a high-current driver.
When you need a NEMA 17 STEP file
A motor is placed where it belongs in the model before it is bought.
NEMA 17 in a CAD assembly
A designer drops the NEMA 17 or 23 model into their own CAD assembly and checks that the motor and the bolt pattern fit.
Motor for an extruder
Picks the SY35 for an extruder or a bowden setup: one shaft drives, the other comes out the back for an encoder, a hand knob or a second gear stage.
Which NEMA 23 length
Compares NEMA 23 from 41 to 115 mm and sees how much room the longer body takes before asking for more torque.
Teaching model to print
A teacher shows the path from controller through driver to motor and the plate that holds it, and students print the model.
How to pick a motor and read its dimensions
There is no numeric solve here. The tool shows a ready 3D model and next to it the rules the part works by.
Choice
You pick a category, a part and a variant: the length of NEMA 23 (41, 51, 56, 78, 82, 93 or 115 mm) and of NEMA 34 (80 or 116 mm).
3D model
Each variant is its own model from the real CAD, loaded from the site and centred on the box that fits it.
Check and download
The check shows the standard, type or function and notes about the driver.
| Applies to | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Stepper motor | 360° / 1.8° = 200 | steps per turn; microstepping (×16 or ×32 on the card, up to ×128 on the driver) makes the motion smoother |
| NEMA 23 torque | torque ∝ body length | a longer body means more winding and more torque, but also more inertia and cost |
| Induction motor | n ≈ 120·f / p | f is the supply frequency, p the number of poles; the real speed is a little lower because of the slip s |
| Encoder | resolution = PPR; ×4 with quadrature | PPR is pulses per turn; with quadrature the resolution read out is 4 times higher |
NEMA 17 3D model: every length is its own part
Every length is its own 3D model
NEMA 23 in 7 lengths is 7 different models, not one motor stretched with a slider.
The tool shows the shape and the dimensions of the motor. Torque, current, voltage and speed of a particular motor are not calculated and not given as numbers: they are in the maker's catalogue.
Each part is viewed on its own, with no assembly and no motion simulation. The model is for a fit check and a mock-up, not for sizing a drive.
NEMA 17 dimensions and stepper motor questions
What are the NEMA 17 dimensions?
The flange is 42×42 mm and the shaft is Ø5 mm. The sizes are in the check to the left of the model, and the model itself is 1:1.
Is there a STEP file for NEMA 17 and NEMA 23?
Yes. STEP is there for 14 of the 16 variants: all steppers except the SY35, and also the encoder, the driver and the mounting plate. STL and 3MF are there for all.
What is the difference between NEMA 17 and NEMA 23?
The flange: NEMA 17 is 42×42 mm with a Ø5 mm shaft, NEMA 23 is 57×57 mm with a Ø6.35 mm shaft. NEMA 23 comes in 7 lengths, from 41 to 115 mm: a longer body gives more torque, but also more inertia and cost.
How many steps does a stepper motor have per turn?
200 per turn: 360° / 1.8° = 200.
How to choose a stepper motor?
Start from the flange (NEMA 17, 23 or 34) and the length, and check in the model that it fits. Torque, current, voltage and speed are in the maker's catalogue.
What does the DQ542MA driver do?
It sits between the controller and a NEMA 17 or 23 motor: it takes STEP and DIR signals and feeds regulated current to the windings with microstepping. Current and microstepping (from ×1 to ×128) are set with DIP switches, and its description gives up to about 4.2 A.
Is it free to download a NEMA 17 3D model?
Yes. Without an account the tool opens 3 times a day. A free account removes the limit.
