Linear rail 3D model: STL and 3MF, STEP for HGH, MGN7H and MGN12H

Pick a category and a catalogue code such as HGH20, SFU1605 or MGN12H, and get a 1:1 3D model of the real part. Download it as STL or 3MF, and for some sizes as STEP too.

What these linear rail 3D models are

This is a free online tool from EduFacturing that gives 3D models of ready-made parts for linear axes: profile rails (linear guides), sliders, ball screws, a lead screw, timing pulleys, a coupling and a motor bracket. Each part is 1:1 CAD geometry from a catalogue and downloads as STL or 3MF.

The parts sit in 6 categories. You choose the size by catalogue code.

The material (one of 8: POM, PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, nylon, PETG-CF, resin) colours the model and gives a short note on the material. The geometry does not change.

Gives 58 variants of 23 parts

HGH rails, SCS and SBR20UU sliders, an LMK block, SFU screws with a nut, a lead screw, EF and FF supports, GT2 and GT3 pulleys, a coupling, a V-slot actuator, a NEMA23 bracket and 9 library parts.

Gives every size as its own 3D model

HGH runs from HGH15 to HGH45 as a full guide, rail only or carriage only: 18 models. SCS covers shafts from Ø8 to Ø30, and SFU is SFU1604, SFU1605 or SFU2005.

Downloads an STL, 3MF and STEP file

STL and 3MF are built in the browser, and STEP is a link to the catalogue file. For 24 of the 58 variants there is a “Download STEP (CAD)” link.

Explains the part next to the model

Each part has a principle, a formula and an application. The check shows where the geometry comes from and adds a note where there is a trade-off: the lead screw is less efficient than the ball screw.

When you need a linear guide 3D model

A linear axis is designed with the real dimensions of the parts, before they are bought.

  • Rail in a CAD assembly

A designer drops the STEP or STL rail into their own CAD assembly to check the carriage dimensions.

  • Rail for a 3D printer upgrade

Compares MGN12H, which the card describes as the standard profile rail for upgrading the Z axis of an Ender 3, with LM8UU on a smooth rod.

  • Ball screw or lead screw

Compares the SFU1605 ball screw (efficiency about 90%) with the trapezoidal screw at a 3 mm pitch, which is self-locking.

  • Teaching model to print

A teacher shows how rail, carriage, screw and the EF and FF supports fit together, and students print the model.

How to pick a part and get the file

There is no numeric solve here: the tool picks a ready 3D model by its designation and shows the rules the part works by.

  1. Choice

    You pick one of 6 sections, a part and a size (HGH15 to HGH45, SCS8 to SCS30, EF6 to EF20).

  2. 3D model

Each variant is its own model from the real CAD, loaded from the site and centred on the box that fits it.

  3. Check and download

The check shows where the geometry comes from and a note where there is a trade-off; for GT2 pulleys it also works out the travel per turn.

The rules the tool shows
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Ball screw and lead screws = n · ps is the travel, n the turns, p the pitch: the lead screw has p = 3 mm, SFU1605 has p = 5 mm
SFU designationSFUxxyy → Ø xx mm, pitch yy mmSFU2005 is Ø20 mm with a 5 mm pitch; the ball screw efficiency is about 90%
GT2 pulleytravel per turn = z · 2 mmz is the tooth count: 14 teeth give 28 mm, 20 teeth 40 mm, 40 teeth 80 mm per turn

Linear rail STEP file and STL: what is different

  • Every size is its own 3D model

HGH20 and HGH35 are two different bodies, not one body stretched to another number. The list also gives the shaft or screw diameter and the pitch.

  • The author is named

Nine parts come from the FreeCAD Parts Library under CC-BY 3.0. The authors (k2-mirror, Adrian McEwen, obijuan, Francisco, diegotrap) are on the part's card.

What it does not do

The tool shows geometry and designations, but it does not calculate load capacity, guide life, stiffness or accuracy. For those, use the maker's catalogue and a separate calculation.

Each part is viewed on its own, with no assembly and no motion simulation. The models are for mock-ups, fit checks and teaching assemblies: a load-bearing axis is built from bought parts with the same designations.

Linear rail 3D model questions

How to download a linear rail 3D model?

Pick a category and a size such as HGH20 or SFU1605, then download STL or 3MF. For 24 of the 58 variants there is also STEP.

Is there a STEP file for HGH20 or MGN12H linear rails?

Yes. STEP is there for 24 of the 58 variants: all HGH (full guide, rail and carriage), GT2 with 20 teeth, the lead screw, MGN7H, MGN12H, SCS20 and the NEMA23 bracket.

What is a linear guide?

A rail with a carriage that slides along it, also called a profile rail. The tool has HGH rails from HGH15 to HGH45, MGN7H and MGN12H, and SCS and SBR20UU sliders.

What is the difference between a ball screw and a lead screw?

In the SFU ball screw, balls roll between screw and nut, so efficiency is about 90%. In the trapezoidal screw the nut slides: efficiency is lower, but it is self-locking and tolerates dirt. Its pitch here is 3 mm.

How to choose a linear rail?

Start from the catalogue code, then check the fit with the 1:1 model. The tool does not calculate load capacity, guide life, stiffness or accuracy; for those use the maker's catalogue.

What is the difference between an EF and an FF support?

EF is the floating end: it takes radial load and lets the screw grow with heat. FF is the fixed end: it takes the axial thrust through thrust bearings, on the motor side. Use one FF and one EF.

Is it free to download these 3D models?

Yes. Without an account the tool opens 3 times a day; a free account removes the limit.
