STL file sites: search 6 platforms and preview your model in 3D

Type what you need and get a link to the search on Thingiverse, Printables, MakerWorld, Thangs, Cults3D and GrabCAD, plus a way into our libraries. Then drop in your own STL or OBJ file, turn it in 3D and see its size, volume and overhang. The app screen is in Bulgarian.

STL file sites and this page

STL file sites are places where people upload and download models for 3D printing; STL is the format a slicer cuts into layers. This page is one search box for six such places: Thingiverse, Printables, MakerWorld, Thangs, Cults3D and GrabCAD, plus a way into the EduFacturing libraries.

The six platforms belong to other companies; their names are trademarks. Their results appear on their own sites, and they decide whether a model can be downloaded.

If you already have a file, drop it in here. Size, volume, overhang and triangles are worked out in your browser; the file goes to the server only if you save it.

What a search across six platforms does

Searches one word on six platforms

Type for example “gridfinity bin” and press “Търси” (Search). Each of the six platforms gets a card with a “Виж модели” (View models) button that opens its search in a new tab; the libraries card opens their start page.

Tells you which platform to use

In the “Edi те насочва” (Edi guides you) section you describe what you look for and press “Питай Edi” (Ask Edi). Edi is told to pick one of seven platforms and say why, in Bulgarian; an answer off the list shows only the explanation.

Shows your STL or OBJ in 3D

Drop the file in, turn the model with the mouse and read the size in mm, the volume in cm³, the overhang in % and the triangle count.

Checks whether it fits

You pick one of 14 printers and one of 9 materials. You get rule-based warnings and, on request, Edi's opinion on orientation, supports and material. The file and the review can be kept in your library.

When you need a model search and an STL preview

The page helps when you look for a ready model or want to know what is inside a downloaded file.

  • You need a ready model

Type one word and open the search on several platforms side by side.

  • You downloaded an STL and are not sure it fits

Pick your printer and read whether the model fits or only when turned by 90°.

  • You need an engineering part

Our libraries are described in the app as bearings, profiles and fasteners, and GrabCAD as engineering STEP files.

  • You want an opinion before a long print

Edi looks at overhang, proportions, size, material and printer and gives a verdict, orientation, supports and tips.

How an uploaded STL file is measured

The numbers come from the file itself, and the warnings from four rules.

  1. The file is read in the browser

An STL or OBJ becomes a mesh of triangles; from it come the size (read as millimetres), the volume and the overhang area.

  2. Rules give the warnings

An overhang of 5% or more, a tall and narrow model, a proportion above 8:1 and a model that does not fit the printer each give one warning. The 45° angle, the 3-to-1 ratio and the 8:1 proportion come from the EduFacturing rules for FDM; the 5% limit is set in the app.

  3. Edi explains the numbers

Only on pressing “Питай Edi за печатимостта” (Ask Edi about printability) do the numbers, material, printer and warnings go to the server, not the file. The AI returns an assessment.

The rules and sums inside the app
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Overhangoverhang % = area of downward-facing faces tilted more than 45° from vertical ÷ total area · 100faces on the bed are not counted; warning from 5%
Tall and narrow modelheight > 3 · the smaller of the X and Y sizesrisk of vibration and lifting off the bed
VolumeV = |Σ a · (b × c)| ÷ 6a sum over the triangles in mm³; shown in cm³

  • One word for every platform

The word is typed once and passed to the search of every platform.

  • The file stays in your browser

Size, volume and overhang are worked out on your side; the file goes to the server only when you press “Запази в библиотеката” (Save to library).

  • A fit check for 14 printers

Fit is checked against a list of 14 models from Bambu Lab, Prusa, Creality, Elegoo, Anycubic and Sovol.

What it does not do with other people's models

The page holds no other people's models and shows none of their results: links open their own sites. The labels “теглене позволено” (download allowed) and “само линк” (link only) are the app's note about a platform, not a model; read a model's terms on its site.

It accepts STL and OBJ and reads sizes as millimetres. It does not measure wall thickness. The volume is exact only for a closed model, and with holes in the mesh it is a rough guide. Edi is an AI, is for FDM printing and does not see the file; its question and the numbers pass through the EduFacturing server.

Questions about STL file sites

Where to find STL files for a 3D printer?

On platforms such as Thingiverse, Printables, MakerWorld, Thangs, Cults3D and GrabCAD. You type one word and get a link to the search on each, plus a way into our libraries. Downloading happens on the platform's site, on its terms.

How to open an STL file?

Drop it in the “Внеси и прегледай модел” (Import and view a model) box. A 3D preview opens that you turn and zoom with the mouse, with the size, volume, overhang and triangle count below. It accepts STL and OBJ.

Will my model fit my 3D printer?

You pick a printer from the list of 14 and the app compares the model's size with its build area. It tells you if the model does not fit or fits only turned by 90°. Other printers are not checked.

Is the app in English?

No. The screen and Edi's answers are in Bulgarian. You can type search words in English. The MakerWorld and Cults3D links open their English pages, and the libraries link opens the Bulgarian /biblioteki/ page.

How much does searching and previewing models cost?

Access is with a free account. The platforms the links lead to have their own terms and prices.
