A smart enclosure turns an ordinary printer into a production tool with a controlled environment. This course covers design, construction and automation – from a plywood box to an intelligent chamber with feedback control.

What you will learn

  • Why chamber temperature drives warp and delamination
  • Insulation materials and their fire behaviour
  • Active heating with PTC elements and silicone heaters
  • Humidity control with desiccants and active ventilation
  • HEPA and activated-carbon filtration for UFPs and VOCs
  • PID control with a microcontroller and thermistor/RTD sensor
  • Printer integration via G-code or a network bus

Course outline

  • Lesson 1: Why the chamber is critical for engineering polymers
  • Lesson 2: Construction – frame, panels, insulation, door
  • Lesson 3: Electrical safety and emergency shutdown
  • Lesson 4: Active heating with PID control
  • Lesson 5: Humidity, drying and filament storage inside the enclosure
  • Lesson 6: Particulate and gas filtration
  • Lesson 7: Sensors, logging and notifications
  • Lesson 8: Final project – a working smart enclosure

Prerequisites

A completed course-fdm101-basics, basic electrical knowledge and a willingness to work with tools. course-iot201-arduino-esp32 is recommended for the automation module.

Outcome

You build a smart enclosure with active temperature control and filtration that enables stable printing in ABS, ASA, PC and PA materials.

Who it is for

Advanced makers, owners of small production setups, and engineers integrating 3D printing into a production line.
