Thermoforming / Vacuum Forming

Thermoforming is a highly efficient formative manufacturing process designed for shaping thermoplastic sheets or films.

Process Definition & Working Principle

Thermoforming is a highly efficient formative manufacturing process designed for shaping thermoplastic sheets or films. The technology relies on heating a flat, pre-extruded plastic sheet until it reaches its softening temperature, stretching and conforming it over or into a mold cavity using external forces (vacuum, positive pressure, or mechanical plugs), cooling the polymer until it solidifies, and trimming the finished part from the surrounding clamping frame flange.

The physical cycle consists of four distinct operational phases:

Kinematics, Axes, & Machine Configuration

The mechanical architecture of thermoforming machinery comprises several interconnected subsystems that must operate in precise kinematic synchronization. The core hardware components include the heating oven, clamping frame, forming table with pneumatic or hydraulic drives, vacuum pump with surge tank, and the upper platen carrying the mechanical plug assist.

Heating System Technology

Heaters are positioned in top and bottom ovens that slide or pivot into place. They are classified by the peak wavelength of their infrared (IR) emission spectrum:
