iMachining Technology Level

SolidCAM’s patented iMachining technology represents a paradigm shift in subtractive CNC manufacturing.

Theoretical Background & Core Technology

SolidCAM’s patented iMachining technology represents a paradigm shift in subtractive CNC manufacturing. Rather than relying on traditional, static feed and speed charts paired with simple offset toolpaths, iMachining employs a dynamic, real-time calculation engine called the Technology Wizard. This system coordinates tool path geometry, machine capabilities, and material properties to maximize material removal rates (MRR) while drastically extending tool life.

Machine & Material Database Integration

The accuracy of iMachining's output is directly dependent on the inputs defined within the Global Databases.

  * Max Spindle Speed (RPM) * Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS)
  * Max Feed Rate (mm/min)                      * Hardness (HB/HRC) - Reference Only
  * Spindle Power (kW/HP)                       * Specific Cutting Force (Kc1.1)
  * Machine Rigidity Factor * Material Ductility Coefficient

The Machine Database

To ensure the Technology Wizard does not generate parameters that exceed the physical capabilities of your CNC hardware, the following parameters must be configured:

  • Max Spindle Speed (RPM): Sets the absolute upper ceiling for speed calculations. If the Wizard calculates that a material/tool combination requires 12,000 RPM, but the machine is capped at 8,000 RPM, the Wizard will scale down the spindle speed and adjust the feed rate proportionally to maintain the target chip thickness.
  • Max Feed Rate (mm/min): Limits the linear velocity of the machine axes. Crucial for ensuring that high-feed calculations in open areas do not exceed the machine’s rapid/cutting feed limits.
  • Spindle Power (kW or HP): Defines the mechanical torque limits. The Wizard calculates the expected power consumption based on the Material Removal Rate (MRR). If the calculated power exceeds the spindle power rating, the Wizard reduces the radial engagement angle or feed rate to prevent motor stalling.
  • Rigidity Factor: A multiplier that scales down the cutting forces for older or lighter machines (such as desktop CNC routers or light-duty sheet metal machines).
