Theoretical Background & Physical Principles

1.1 Vertical Resolution and Extruded Bead Geometry

In Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, Layer Height is the primary setting defining the thickness of each individual layer deposited along the vertical Z-axis. When molten thermoplastic is forced through the circular nozzle orifice, it is not deposited as a free-hanging cylinder. Instead, the nozzle moves at a set distance above the previous layer (or build plate), compressing (or "squishing") the molten plastic. This compression deforms the round bead into a flat-sided oval or race-track-like cross-section.
