Face Milling Strategies

Face milling is the process of generating a flat surface on a workpiece perpendicular to the spindle axis.

Introduction & Core Concepts

Face milling is the process of generating a flat surface on a workpiece perpendicular to the spindle axis. While seemingly simple, face milling is one of the most critical operations for establishing a datum surface, determining final part heights, and achieving visual cosmetic finishes.

In Fusion 360, the Face operation generates a highly optimized toolpath for clearing flat surfaces. However, achieving premium surface quality and long tool life requires careful configuration of stepovers, pass extensions, stock offsets, and tool entry strategies (roll-in). Misconfigured parameters can lead to insert chipping, exit burrs, chatter, and poor flatness.
