Collision Detection Settings

In CNC milling, collision detection and avoidance are critical for safeguarding machine spindles, tools, workholding fixtures, and the workpiece.

Theoretical Background & Physics of Collisions

In CNC milling, collision detection and avoidance are critical for safeguarding machine spindles, tools, workholding fixtures, and the workpiece. A collision is defined as any unplanned contact between the non-cutting elements of the tool assembly (shaft, holder, spindle nose) or the cutting portion itself with the workpiece, stock, or fixtures during rapid positioning.

Tool Assembly Geometry & Profiles

To calculate clearances accurately, Fusion 360 divides the tool assembly into three distinct geometric regions:

Settings & Parameters Reference

Fusion 360 provides specific options to manage collision parameters, primarily split between the Setup (for fixtures) and the Tool/Passes tabs (for shaft and holder clearances).
