Material selection: a part is only as good as the material under it

The geometry can be perfect, but the wrong material ruins it: it cracks, warps, fails under heat or chemicals. I work with 20+ industrial materials. I help you pick the one that survives real use.

When you need this

  • Parts crack, warp or don't hold up
  • You don't know which material covers strength/temp/chemistry
  • Choosing between PLA, PETG, ABS, nylon, composites, resins

What you get

  • A material recommendation by load and environment
  • Alternatives with their trade-offs
  • Print parameters for the chosen material

How it works

  1. How and where the part works
  2. Analysis: requirements vs properties
  3. Recommendation: material + parameters

Typical cases

  • A bracket tough against impact but not the sun: An outdoor part held up mechanically but UV exposure made it brittle over time: a material swap solved it without changing the geometry.
  • A part near an engine that went soft: A functional part near a heat source deformed at operating temperature: a higher-temperature-rated material stopped the failure.
  • A chemically exposed tank: A component in contact with solvent broke down after short use: a chemically resistant material made it durable.

The rules that solve most of the problems

  • The environment decides, not the look you want: Material is chosen by where and how the part works, not by which one looks best.
  • Strength is stated, not assumed: Every claim about a material has to tie back to the real load, not a general feeling.
  • Print parameters follow the material: The wrong setting undoes even the perfect material choice.
  • Trade-offs are always in play: A tougher material often means a harder print or a costlier process: we choose deliberately, not by default.

Who it's for

Anyone whose part has a real function, not just a look.

    FAQ
Resins and metal too?Yes. From plastics to metal powders.
Print settings included?Yes, for the chosen material.
Can I switch material on a part that's already designed?Yes, but the geometry sometimes needs a small tweak: materials don't shrink the same way.
Does this only apply to a new part? No. I apply it to a part that's already failing, to find the exact cause.
