NHIF payments to hospitals: what the radar shows

NHIF payments to hospitals in Bulgaria are recorded in the fund's monthly hospital care reports. The EduFacturing Health Radar lines up 228 of those reports in one table: for each of 445 medical establishments you see the amount paid by year and by type of payment.

The figures are as the fund published them: the radar only sums them, scores nothing and ranks no one for quality. It covers 2015 to 2026 without 2018, and 2026 is a part year: the latest report runs to 30 June 2026.

What the Health Radar shows for each hospital

Finds a hospital

Type part of a name or a provider code and the table narrows with each letter. There are 445 establishments in 28 regional health insurance funds.

Keeps the five payment types apart

Pick hospital care under the National Framework Contract (NRD), medical devices, oncology medicines, COVID method 7a or Art. 5 staff pay. With no choice you see the types added together.

Shows an amount for each year

The column for a year holds the latest report published for it, not a sum of the monthly ones.

Adds up the rows shown

A line under the table sums the hospitals shown. Pick a regional fund or type part of a name and it sums just those.

When to check NHIF payments to a hospital

The radar helps when you want to check what the NHIF paid without reading the reports one by one.

  • When you write about health care

Look up what the fund paid a hospital over the years and under which type of payment before you quote a figure.

  • When you work in a hospital

See where the hospital stands among the others in its regional fund, within one payment type.

  • When you are a patient

Check whether the hospital you go to has NHIF payments at all, and under which type.

  • When you analyse data

Look at a ready table by hospital and year instead of 228 separate reports, and name the fund as the source.

How to read the figures: reports cumulative to a date

The radar does not change the published amounts: it only adds them up itself, as the Total for a hospital and the sum row under the table.

  1. One report per year

Each monthly report accumulates the amounts from the start of the year, so the radar takes only the latest one for a year; adding the monthly reports would overstate the annual figure many times over.

  2. A separate payment type

Each of the five types is kept apart in the data. With no type chosen, the table adds the types for the hospital.

  3. The Total column and the sum row

Total is the sum of the years for the hospital, and the row under the table sums the hospitals shown, year by year.

  4. Order

Hospitals are sorted by Total, largest first, for the chosen payment type.

How the figures in the table are built
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Total columntotal = sum of the yearly amountsfor the chosen payment type; 2018 is missing, 2026 is a part year
Sum of the rows shownsum = sum of the Total of the hospitals shownchanges with the search and the regional fund

What you get beyond one figure

  • One table instead of 228 reports

Every hospital's amounts sit in one place by year and type, and the search finds a hospital by name or by code.

  • Payment types can be viewed one by one

Oncology medicines, medical devices and hospital care under the NRD are separate in the data. Their sum is not a hospital's income from beds and staff, so compare figures within one type.

  • It says which date a report runs to

For 2026 it says it is a part year and the latest report runs to 30 June 2026.

What the Health Radar does not tell you about hospitals

The radar judges no one: it shows only what was paid and says nothing about quality of care, violations or why one figure is larger than another.

The years are not alike. 2018 is missing, 2026 runs to 30 June, and in the radar's data 2016 holds only oncology medicines, 2017 and 2019 only medical devices, while COVID method 7a and Art. 5 appear only for 2021 and 2022. So compare years within one payment type.

Hospital names are shown as the fund records them, in Bulgarian, and are not translated. Searching by an English or transliterated name finds nothing: use the Bulgarian name or the provider code. Amounts on the screen are in euro: reports up to 2025 were in Bulgarian lev and are converted at the fixed rate of 1.95583 lev to the euro; from 2026 the fund publishes in euro. For 20 of 445 establishments the data has no name, only the provider code.

Questions: how much does the NHIF pay hospitals in Bulgaria

How much does NHIF pay hospitals in Bulgaria?

The radar gives no single figure for all hospitals: it shows what each of 445 establishments was paid, by year and by type of payment, with a sum of the rows shown under the table. The latest report in the data runs to 30 June 2026.

Can I see NHIF payments to a single hospital?

Yes. Type part of the name in Bulgarian, or the provider code: the table narrows while you type. Payment type and regional fund narrow it further.

What types of NHIF payments does the radar show?

Five: hospital care under the NRD, medical devices, oncology medicines, COVID method 7a and Art. 5 staff pay. They are kept apart unless you choose All types.

Why is 2018 missing from the NHIF payments?

The published reports the radar uses do not include it, so there is no column for it. The radar does not fill gaps.

Are the hospital names in English?

No. They are shown as the fund records them, in Bulgarian, and are not translated. The labels, filters and notes are in English.

Are the figures for a whole year?

Not always. Each year holds the last published report, cumulative to a date: for 2026, 30 June.

Is the Health Radar free?
