Scientific calculator with unit converter: sine, logs, powers, units

Type an expression such as sin(45) + sqrt(2), or build it with the keys, and see the result while you type. The calculator handles powers, roots, logarithms and trigonometry in degrees or radians, and the second tab converts 53 units.

What a scientific calculator online is

A scientific calculator online is a calculator that goes beyond the four operations: it handles powers, roots, logarithms and trigonometric functions in degrees or radians. This one from EduFacturing opens in the browser, free and with no account.

Next to it sits a unit converter. You write the expression on one line, for example (3 + 4) * 2^3, and the calculations run in your browser.

What it calculates: expressions, angles, logs, units

Calculates expressions with brackets, powers and roots

You type + - * / ^ and brackets: (3 + 4) * 2^3 is 56. Brackets come first, then ^, then * and /, then + and -. A power is worked from right to left: 2^3^2 is 512.

Calculates sine, cosine and tangent in degrees or radians

The default is degrees: sin(30) is 0.5. In Radians (RAD) the same angle is sin(pi/6), and tan(30) gives −6.405 because 30 is now in radians.

Calculates logarithms and powers of e

log(100) is 2, ln(e) is 1, exp(1) is 2.718281828. The constants pi and e are written in lower case. A logarithm with another base: ln(8) / ln(2) is 3.

Converts 53 units in 8 categories

You pick a category, a number, From and To. The table on the right shows the same number in every unit of the category, and the swap button flips the two units.

When you need a scientific calculator and a converter

You need a scientific calculator when an ordinary one runs out: angles, logarithms and foreign units.

  • A physics or math problem

A student checks a result with a sine, a logarithm or a root and picks degrees or radians to match the problem.

  • A slope or an angle in the workshop

The slope of a 30° angle is tan(30), about 0.577. An angle from a ratio of sides: atan(1) is 45°.

  • Sizes from a foreign drawing

Inches to millimeters: 1 in is 25.4 mm. Mile, foot and yard are in the Length category, the gallon is under Volume.

  • Temperature and data

    212 °F is 100 °C, and 300 K is 26.85 °C. In the converter, 1 TB is 1024 GB.

How an expression is calculated and units are converted

An expression goes through three steps and is never run as a program.

  1. Reading

The text is split into numbers, operations, brackets and function names. An unknown character or function gives an error message.

  2. Ordering by priority

    Dijkstra's shunting-yard algorithm puts the operations in reverse Polish notation: 3 + 4 * 2 becomes 3 4 2 * +.

  3. Calculating and display

Numbers pile up on a stack and each operation takes what it needs from the top. The result has up to 10 significant digits: 0.1 + 0.2 shows as 0.3.

Degrees or radians and a history of calculations

  • The angle mode is always visible

The Degrees (DEG) and Radians (RAD) switch sits above the field, and the result area says "mode: degrees" or "mode: radians".

  • The result comes before the equals key

While you type, the result shows faded, next to the note "press = to save".

  • An old expression comes back with one click

The history keeps the last 10 calculations, and a click on an expression returns it to the field.

What the scientific calculator does not do

It does not plot graphs or solve equations, and it has no factorial, fractions, memory or complex numbers. Multiplication is not implied: write 2*pi, not 2pi. The decimal mark is a point or a comma, and a comma between digits is always decimal: 1,000 is one, not a thousand. A form like 1e5 gives an error. The characters −, × and ÷ are accepted as minus, multiply and divide.

A minus before a number is applied after the power: -3^2 gives −9, the same as -(3^2), and (-3)^2 gives 9. The % key only divides by 100: 200 + 10 % is 200.1. The history, the expression and the chosen units stay when you switch tabs, but are not kept after the page is reloaded. The converter has no pressure, energy or angles, and data units are binary only. The square root or logarithm of a negative number and 0/0 show “Not a number (NaN)”, 1/0 shows “∞” and ln(0) shows “-∞”.

Questions about sine, logarithms and units

How to calculate sine on a calculator?

Type sin( and the angle, for example sin(30), and press equals. In Degrees (DEG) mode you get 0.5, and in Radians (RAD) the same angle is sin(pi/6).

How to switch between degrees and radians on a calculator?

Use the Degrees (DEG) and Radians (RAD) switch above the expression field. It applies to sin, cos, tan, asin, acos and atan, and the result area names the active mode.

What is the difference between log and ln?

log is base 10: log(100) is 2. ln is the natural logarithm, base e: ln(e) is 1. For another base divide: ln(8) / ln(2) is 3.

How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

In Unit converter choose Temperature, From Fahrenheit, To Celsius, and enter the number. 212 °F is 100 °C.

How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?

In this converter, 1024: it works in binary units, 1 GB = 1024 MB. It has no decimal system with 1000.
