Picking a 3D printer and material

How to choose a 3D printer and material for one project? You answer 8 questions and get the whole decision at once: a technology, printers, materials, software and consumables.

The choice comes from points and rules over stored lists. AI does not choose: it explains the finished result and helps match a defect to the reference, while every name comes from the list.

There are also five references: defects, a comparison, slicer settings, design rules and “Buy vs print”.

What you get after the questions

Asks eight questions

Role, application, material and printer priority, experience, budget (from under 300 to over 10,000 EUR), size and modelling. Each answer is one click.

Picks a technology, printers and materials

The technology is FDM, SLA, LCD, SLS, DMLS or metal binder jetting (MBJ). Then come up to 6 printers and up to 6 materials of the chosen technology and up to 3 programs. For MBJ the database has no printers or materials.

Explains the pick

Under it are an explanation, steps from the model to the print and common problems. A badge reads “AI explanation” or “Standard explanation”.

Shows where the points come from

“Why this recommendation?” shows the reasons for the technology, the number of candidates and the rules with a citation; a “Why?” button next to every printer and material shows its points.

When you need the picker

The picker helps when you do not yet know where to start.

  • You are buying a first printer

Choose “I'm not sure yet” and set a budget to get a technology and printers by that budget.

  • You own a printer and need a material

Choose “I have a printer”, then pick an application and a material priority. You do not enter the printer model.

  • You make a part for heat or medicine

These two applications do not close the technology. The points favour PEEK, a biocompatible resin and titanium.

  • You compare before buying

“Compare” puts up to 4 technologies, materials or programs side by side, and “Buy vs print” works out the cost of a part.

Where the points come from

The recommendation is a sum of points over stored lists.

  1. The technology comes first

The answers are matched against 9 profiles. A prototype, a functional part and a flexible part lead only to FDM, while a visual model and jewellery lead only to resin. The points decide the rest.

  2. Printers get points, then a check

Printers get points for application, budget, material type, priority and size. The rules check them against a sample material (PLA for FDM, PA12 for powder), an incompatible printer drops to the bottom, the first 6 stay, and only those of the chosen technology are kept.

  3. Materials come from a table

Each material has up to 10 points for the application and up to 10 for the priority. The rules do not check it against the printer shown.

  4. Programs are ranked by price

Programs with no price lead, then those with a paid plan, subscriptions and paid ones. A paid or subscription program of the top price class loses 90 points.

The points in the code
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Technologyapplication up to 25 + role up to 15 + budget up to 10 + experience up to 10the profile with the most points wins
Printerapplication up to 30 + budget up to 40 + material type up to 30 + bonuswith 35 points or fewer it drops out
Materialpoints for the application + points for the priorityeach is 0 to 10; with 0 it drops out
Program100 with no price, 60 with a paid plan, 20 subscription, 8 paid, plus 3, 2 or 1 for price classminus 90 for paid or subscription of the top class

A pick with reasons

  • The whole decision at once

Technology, printer, material and programs come from the same eight answers, not separate pages.

  • The reasons are visible

Next to every printer and material a “Why?” button shows its points, and the rules that fired come with a citation.

  • AI does not replace the choice

A printer, material or program from the database that is not in the result is removed from the explanation; mentioning one of 26 known brands that is not in the result brings back the ready text. Other names are not checked.

Limits of the picker

At most 6 printers are taken and then filtered by technology, so the list can be shorter or empty. DLP never comes out as a technology, so 11 DLP and 2 EBM printers are never recommended, and MBJ has no printers or materials. Printers are checked against one sample material only, and a material is not checked against the printer: confirm compatibility yourself.

The screen says “Grounded in real standards”, but of the 20 standards rules (ISO/ASTM 52900, ISO 17296-2 and others) none rejects a combination. A material price per kilogram is often missing or in dollars, and the result is not a certificate.

Questions about choosing a printer and material

Which 3D printing technology is right for me?

Answer about application, budget, role and experience and you get one technology with its reasons. For a prototype, a functional part or a flexible part the choice is always FDM.

What material is best for 3D printing in my project?

Materials are ranked by the application and the priority you pick, such as strength or low cost. Up to 6 are shown.

Does AI decide which printer to buy?

No. The choice comes from points and rules in the app. AI gets the finished result and writes an explanation, and the badge reads “AI explanation” or “Standard explanation”.

What is sent to the AI?

Your answers, the technology and its reasons, 3 printer, material and program names each, the top printer's parameters, up to 5 citations and defect names. In the defect mode your description goes too.

How much does the printer and material picker cost?

Pro is 15 EUR a month and also opens the other Pro tools. When the AI credits run out, the explanation is a ready text with a “Buy credits” link.

Can it help with a print defect?

Yes. “Fix a defect” looks for your words in the names of 30 cases in the reference. If it finds a match, AI picks the closest of at most 6 and explains it; the solution comes from the reference. If nothing matches, there is no result.
