Laser cutting consumables: when to replace the nozzle and protective lens
Pick the material, thickness, power and hours per day and get how long the nozzle and protective lens last, a nozzle diameter and the cost of replacing late. The hours are estimates.

What the consumables of a cutting head are
Laser cutting consumables are the nozzle and the protective lens of the cutting head: they wear out and are replaced to a plan. This free online tool from EduFacturing estimates, in hours and days, when to replace them. The protective lens is the cheap replaceable glass inside the head, just above the nozzle, not the focusing lens.
The hours are general maintenance practice, not from the rules core. The rules core supplies the oxygen pressure for carbon steel and the nitrogen pressure for stainless (aluminium by analogy), the edge quality by gas, the maximum thickness for a fibre laser on metal, the kerf width and the focus direction where the rule has one. The gas for each material is the tool’s own choice.
How long the nozzle and lens last: what you get
Estimates how long the nozzle and lens last
Nozzle: 60 hours with oxygen, 120 with nitrogen, 250 with compressed air at 5 mm, by a thickness factor. Lens: 300 hours for metal, 500 for organic. Both are divided by your hours per day.
Picks the nozzle diameter
Recommends 1.0 to 4.0 mm (1.2 to 5.0 mm with nitrogen) from a series of 11 diameters. It also shows the gas consumption against a 0.8 mm nozzle.
Reads wear from symptoms
Seven signs: four for the nozzle, two for the lens, one for both. For the nozzle and the lens separately it says “no signal”, “check soon” or “replace now”, and for a burning smell it says to stop the machine.
Works out the cost of replacing late
The cost of replacing now, the cost of delay per hour and the hours until replacing pays off, from your prices and your own scrap rate.
When to replace a laser nozzle
A consumable is replaced to a plan, not when the cut is already bad.
A metal laser shop
Plan the order of nozzles and cover glasses: with oxygen and 5 mm the nozzle lasts 60 hours, about 7.5 days at 8 hours a day.
An operator at the machine
The operator ticks the signs of a ragged cut and sees what to replace.
An owner or process engineer
Compare the cost of replacing with the cost of scrap.
How nozzle and lens life is worked out
Every estimate is a base value by gas or material group, multiplied by a factor. The bases are a planning guide, not a guarantee.
Gas and material
The gas follows the material: oxygen for carbon steel, nitrogen for stainless steel and aluminium, compressed air for acrylic, wood and MDF.
The lens
The lens does not depend on thickness but on the material group and the extraction.
| Applies to | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle | life = base(gas) · k; k = 5 / thickness, between 0.4 and 1.5 | base: oxygen 60 h, nitrogen 120 h, compressed air 250 h; thickness in mm |
| Lens | life = base(group) · f | base: metal 300 h, organic 500 h; f = 1.0 with good and 0.4 with poor extraction |
| Gas consumption | index = (d / 0.8)² | against a 0.8 mm nozzle; it grows with the area of the opening |
| Replace and delay | R = consumable + (downtime / 60) · rate; D = parts per hour · value · scrap / 100; B = R / D | R is the cost of replacing, D the cost of delay per hour, B the hours until replacing pays off |
What is from the rules core and what is practice
It shows what is from the rules core and what is practice
Next to the gas pressure, the focus and the thickness warning sits the rule from the rules core, and the life hours are marked as outside it.
The scrap rate is your input
It starts at 10% on screen and you replace it with your own. At 0% delay costs nothing by this sum.
It checks the cut is within the machine’s reach
For a fibre laser on metal, it compares the thickness with the maximum for the power class, for example 10 mm carbon steel at 1-2 kW.
The hours are generalised from common practice at about 5 mm thickness, not measured for your head model or nozzle brand. Inspection and symptoms have the last word. The 20 bar upper limit for nitrogen is conventional: the structured rule is “at least 10 bar”, and its note says 10-20+ bar.
The metres cut are a rough estimate from a typical speed for the power class. Piercing counts are not entered, and the focusing lens and mirrors are not calculated.
Questions about the laser nozzle and lens
How long does a laser nozzle last?
As a guide at 5 mm: 60 hours with oxygen, 120 with nitrogen, 250 with compressed air. Thickness changes it from 0.4 to 1.5 times: 20 mm carbon steel with oxygen gives 24 hours, about 3 days at 8 hours a day.
When to replace a laser protective lens?
The base life is 300 hours for metal and 500 for organic. With poor extraction it is multiplied by 0.4: for organic that is 200 hours, about 25 days at 8 hours a day. The factor is illustrative, not measured.
How do I tell a worn nozzle from a dirty lens?
A ragged edge with dross, a distorted tip, an unsteady gas sound and slower piercing point to the nozzle. Spots on the glass and a drop in speed or quality at the same settings point to the lens. A burning smell means stop the machine.
How to choose laser cutting nozzle size?
The recommendation is 1.0 to 4.0 mm (1.2 to 5.0 mm with nitrogen) from a series of 11 diameters. Nitrogen needs more gas, so the choice goes up one step: at 5 mm from 1.5 to 1.8 mm. Consumption grows with the square of the diameter: 1.5 mm gives ×3.52 and 1.8 mm ×5.06.
When does replacing a consumable pay off?
With a 20 EUR consumable, 15 minutes of downtime and a rate of 41 EUR an hour, replacing costs 30.25 EUR. At 5 parts an hour worth 10 EUR each and 10% scrap, delay costs 5.00 EUR an hour: replacing pays off in 6.05 hours.
